French driving test

Post by Lily-Anne on Sat Sep 04, 2010 8:15 pm

France was the first country in the world to have a formal driving test. Vera Hedges Butler was the first person from the UK to travel to France, and obtain a driving licence.

" It's becoming harder to get a driving licence in France. Last year only just over 52% of those taking the practical driving test for “Permis B” were successful; this compares with an average of 57% across the previous ten years. One reason is that in many areas – including here – the test has been lengthened from 20 to 35 minutes which gives a candidate more time to make mistakes. And here’s a useful – if unsurprising – tip: would-be drivers who are tested in rural or semi-rural areas are more likely to succeed than those who have to show off their skills in a busy town. "

I think there are similarities here, to pass a test in a busy town is surely harder than someone who lives in a very rural area.

The Spanish driving test is only 20 minutes long but in the car is: The Instructor in the front passenger seat, The Examiner sitting the back giving directions etc and 3, yes 3, candidates who take it in turns to take their test.

Their Highway code is three times bigger than ours but they also have a higher mortality rate for road traffic collisions. Probably distracted by remembering which rules apply.

A few months ago an ADI told me that the French system was a 2 part test 12 months apart.
I.E. Pupil does a test to allow them to drive alone displaying A plates, APPRENTICE.
Then 12 months later they take another test to become FULL license holder.

Would it work here ?

PS The Indian driving test is VERY easy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQfebWWVdJo
