New driving population

Although driving tests in the UK rose in 2010, the number of 17 year olds learning to drive is quite low. Approximately a third of young people say they will not be learning to drive in the near future, reasons stated were, can't afford a car, insurance costs were too high, public transport had improved. Interestingly they did not feel driving lesson prices were a problem, saying that between £20 and £25 was fair.

There has been an increase in older female drivers, and although young males dominate the full licence holder groups in the under 29's, it appears that the gap decreses in later years, with more women in their late 30's and early 40's learning to drive.

Although more cars were sold in 2010/11, the average annual mileage has fallen, so it seems journeys overall were less. Women made more journeys but men covered more miles.
