Rolling Holdback Empty Rolling Holdback

Post by Michelleadi Wed Sep 08, 2010 10:42 pm

Got this newish pupil, has been driving around with partner for a couple of years after she gave up on a qualifed instructor a few years ago.

Anyway today I was explaining to her the rolling holdback position for a meeting situation, this went well and demonstrated this a few times, we was approaching a set of traffic lights which from a distance we could see were at red, she slowed her speed down which was like a rolling holdback and as we got about 10 metres away they turned to green which meant she just geared down and off we went, my question is how far back can you start slowing down when you see the lights are at red to try and keep continous movement? I always teach my pupils if lights are at red to anticipate green blah blah blah

It is and always will be determined by the other factors and road users in any given situation.

You could be in a situation where to slow early would almost guarantee the following driver overtakes and even does so aggressively. This conjures up a scenario that would be completely unacceptable.

Same scenario minus the other driver could be more than acceptable.

Therefore the distance is circumstantial.

Always consider worst case scenario (include the nutters, boy racers, flat cap brigade, ADIs etc.)

So pupil will eventually anticipate the lights but also anticipate any other road user who could be involved in their situation at that moment.

yeah I see where your coming from, there are so many idiots on the road who just dont have any consideration for anyone, driving ahead yesterday when this driver came straight across us from the right did a U turn and drove off, good job my pupil was alert (and me or course Smile ), or when your on a 50 road and your up to speed but drivers still feel the need to break the law and overtake, lets hope the police cars with the speed guns are round the corner.

Not a minority group though - not just the idiots. But the Jekyll and Hyde crew as well:- You know normal law abiding people who just become the aggressive nutter, idiot, the moment they take control of a vehicle.
