feedback on independent driving Empty feedback on independent driving

Had some pupil feedback on independent driving. One of my learners is at school and a couple of her friends with other instructors have had tests, four in fact, and all failed. Their instructors blamed the test, but as I explained to her, you can either drive or you can't. I can't believe that such a subtle change can create such poor results.

I agree, if they can drive it shouldn't cause the majority any problems at all.

The only problem I forsee is the DSA pass rates, there are so many reports of the figures being 'tweaked' will we see more pupils passing who just can't drive safely. The research shows that following signs and directions increases the chance of serious faults, and, that is after an average of 51 hours.

I was against the idea of ID at first. I thought and still do to a degree, that people being taught in and around the test route areas will stand a better chance of passing than those taught away from them. Familliarity with road systems, knowlage of the areas, where there are hidden signs / traffic lights, knowlage of where 1 way streets are etc.

But now, having thought about it, what problems could there be ?. After all, if they can drive, they can drive.

Can I blame the test for my pupils failure ? Not at all !

As an instructor, is it not my job to prepare them for the test ? Should i not be training my pupils to follow road signs / markings, to be able to follow 3 instructions to turn left/right at roundabouts/ traffic lights etc.

I have been doing this for months now so that my pupils were/are ready for the ID. Those that are blaming the test for thier pupils failures IMHO, should be looking at the way in which they have prepared thier pupils for test and asking themselves what they could have done different to prepare them. There has been enought information around for the last few months to inform instructors about what the changes are about. ADI associasions, Dispatch, and several other publications have been telling us about it and what to expect for months

I agree, but won't pupils always look for something or someone to blame. Even if they were well trained they will blame the ADI, examiner, or changes to the test.

Having listened to other ADIs wanting to write down test routes because they are no longer published, and write down which bits are ID, I wonder if many actually get why. If the instructor doesn't know why, then how does the pupil?

I don't have any tests coming up at the moment, but I've always used a bit of route planning in lessons, as that is the one thing they never seem to be able to do.

The DSA notes and guidelines are on our website, and have been for a few weeks, so yes you are right, the information is out there it's just so few seem to look for it. Will be interested in your pupils feedback as more tests take place.

hi Admin

Have taken just the 1 so. She had her test on mon the 4th so was 1 of the 1st to do the new test. Although she was unlucky to fail, not on ID but on a manouver, her opinion of ID is that it was a piece of cake, a doddle were her exact words.

I to have now taken just the one ID test and to be honest, for this pupil it made the test easier, I sat in and her concentration was better than pre ID as she now believed she should drive as though she was on her own, (she had been told before but I guess did not see the gravity before) She achieved a good pass and bear in mind this was her third test, so was able to comment on the difference, her words were "I really think it made the test easier".

Now looking forward to the next one Smile

I haven't got any tests booked yet, but am expecting one in November. Hmm, do I sit in?
